7 Thieves’ Techniques You Should Be Aware of When You Are in London!

⚠️ While London is generally a safe city, like any major tourist destination, it has its fair share of petty crime and theft, particularly in crowded areas popular with visitors.

But don't worry!! we've got you covered. BACCOM has put together a handy guide packed with essential tips to help you spot shady behaviour and steer clear of thieves.

Let's dive in and get you prepped to have an amazing, stress-free time in one of the world's greatest cities!

7 Methods Thieves Commonly Use!

1. The Authority Illusion: Thieves Concealed Behind Official Guise. 👮🏻‍♂️

Impersonating an employee is a tactic used by thieves both in the UK and other foreign countries. Thieves disguise themselves as trustworthy officials from different organisations and make us worried until we do what they want. It's possible to do this over the phone or in person.

⚠️ By phone: Thieves might pretend to be trusted authorities like postal carriers, police officers, or delivery workers. These fraudsters will make up urgent matters or problems that supposedly need your quick attention. They'll pressure you to follow their instructions right away.

⚠️ Face-to-face: Thieves often dress up as police officers to approach you. When this happens, be careful and look for ways to verify their identity, or have a friend accompany you. Avoid following anyone without ensuring they are indeed an official.

Hint: Remember, if you're within your rights, insist on detailed clarification first. Officials cannot arbitrarily detain you. Put safety first!!

2. The Foreign Language Scam: Deception Through Linguistic Barriers. 🤯

This trick is widespread across Europe, particularly in countries like France, Germany, and Italy, among others. Thieves typically employ one of two strategies:

⚠️ Solo Act: Thieves, feigning confusion to distract you while they stealthily steal items right in front of you. Their actions are often quick and quiet, leaving you unaware until it's too late.

⚠️ Group Scheme: Thieves operate in teams, with one individual engaging you in confusing conversation to distract you while another quietly removes items from your bag or pockets, reaching in from behind or the side. Be cautious of people around you, as they may be accomplices furthering the distraction.

Hint: If you encounter someone who appears to not understand or speak your language, remain vigilant and keep a close eye on your belongings. While they might genuinely require assistance, staying alert prevents potential thieves from taking advantage of the situation.

3. Proximity Pickpocket in Crowded Places - Thieves Close In When You're Distracted. 👀💥

In crowded locations such as subways, buses, and tourist attractions, pickpockets employ a tactic of getting uncomfortably close to their targets in order to snatch belongings. They capitalise on the chaos and distractions, exploiting crowded environments when individuals let their guard down.

To safeguard your belongings in such scenarios, it's essential to ensure your valuables are securely stored.

Hint: Consider carrying your bags in front of you, and choosing designs that are difficult for others to access unnoticed. Your best defence against these opportunistic thieves is to remain extra vigilant over your belongings whenever you find yourself in a crowded place.

4. The Distraction Cover-Up: A Thief's Tactic in Public Places. 👜🤏🏻

Thieves often employ this method in coffee shops, bars, universities, restaurants, and other public places, particularly targeting younger individuals seated at tables. They initiate a conversation, asking various questions, and subtly place their belongingssuch as a coat, a map or a newspaperover your items like phones or wallets on the table. After engaging you in conversation, they swiftly retrieve their belongings along with your valuables, disappearing into the crowd before you even realise it. You only become aware of what's going on when you reach for your phone or wallet and find it missing. In retrospect, you may make sense of the strange interaction after your things are gone.

Hint: Keep valuables out of sight! Avoid displaying valuable items openly on tables in public places. If a situation feels suspicious or uncomfortable, trust your instincts and consider relocating to a safer location.

5. Mobile Theft: Beware of Thieves on Wheels. 🏍️💢

Even on apparently deserted sidewalks, thieves on bicycles, motorcycles, or even in cars can still unexpectedly swoop in to commit theft. Despite the UK having fewer compared to some countries, this type of theft remains a concern. They often operate in pairs, with one driving while one is getting ready to snatch items, these thieves target unsuspecting victims regardless of their nationality or location. Therefore, remaining vigilant is crucial to avoid falling victim to their tactics.

Hint: Stay aware of your surroundings and any approaching vehicles that could be involved in these hit-and-run theft ploys. If you sense anything suspicious, cross the street or enter a business to avoid potential confrontation!!! 🚴🏽🛻💨

6. Car Burglar - Theft of Vehicles and Personal Property. 🚘👊💥

Car burglars utilise various tools including bats, rocks, and crowbars to break windows and steal items or even entire vehicles. Whether you own or rent a car, it's essential to be careful no matter where you are.

There are 3 common methods thieves often use to target vehicles.

⚠️ Smash and Grab: Thieves break into cars by smashing windows, targeting vehicles with valuables like laptops, phones, and jewellery left inside. They shatter windows to access and steal these items, often opting for secluded locations to evade detection over busy ones.

Hint: Minimise your risk by concealing valuables out of plain sight. If you have to leave them in the car, consider utilising creative hiding spots to further deter potential thieves

⚠️ Carjacking: Leaving cars running elevates the risk of theft. Whether you're warming up or cooling down your car or just stepping away a second for other activities, thieves can exploit these situations. They may keep when the windows are not fully closed or distract the driver gaining access to the car.

Hint: Always be careful when starting your car, ensure your surroundings are safe, windows are securely closed, and avoid unnecessary interactions with strangers.

⚠️ Opportunistic Theft: the advent of remote-controlled cars with smart key systems has introduced a new method for thieves, known as a Relay Attack. This technique involves intercepting the signal from the car key to unlock and start the vehicle without physical access to the key. This method is increasingly widespread.

Hint: Keep your keys in a safe place, turn off automatic signal recognition when not in use, and consider reprogramming the system if purchasing a used car.

7. Exploiting Compassion: Drama Thieves Manipulating Empathy for Gain. 😵‍💫🏆

These types of theft involve creating scenarios to elicit sympathy, presenting themselves as individuals in distress or facing urgent dilemmas. These thieves approach with a variety of fabricated stories. They might say they've forgotten their card or brought the wrong wallet. Sometimes, they'll claim their card has unexpectedly declined and present various pieces of evidence to persuade us. These manipulative tactics aim to lower our defences so that they can trick us more easily.

⚠️ Cautionary True Story: (real-life example from our BACCOM team’s younger brother.)

A well-dressed con artist, driving a luxury convertible, claimed that he had to go back to his home country but his card wouldn't work. He then asked for a short-term loan while presenting his ID and a professional business card, saying that he worked for a reputable company and was a reliable person. The drama thief seemed very trustworthy. While initially convincing, the brother began to double-check the information given online and found some inconsistencies. So, he kept asking the drama thief questions to address the gaps of the information. Eventually, the drama thief sensed trouble and left, saying everything was fine.

So, what's the best approach in such situations?

You could keep asking challenging questions that a genuine person should readily answer, such as requesting to see an ID card or driver's license. You might also ask for the phone number of their parents or a known acquaintance, or any other queries that could help confirm their identity. By keeping up the pressure and insisting on concrete proof, you can scare off the drama thief and shield yourself from being deceived.
